| OBSERVATION OF "WATER MONTHS"
July-August, 2003:
Soil and Water Conservation Department celebrated the
"Water Month" during July-August, 2003 in all the districts of
the State. The different Divisions of the Department organized a series of
Programme and functions relating to water in operational areas where the
watershed Development Project in Shifting Cultivation Areas are
implemented.
In all the programmes, the central theme of water with
emphasis on its conservation, management and uses is highlighted. The
officers of the Department and other Resource persons drawn from other
Departments and organizations dwelt on the need to adopt the right
attitude towards water and warned that the unregulated degradation of
forest and vegetations in watershed areas and near water sources could
lead to water catastrophe in such areas. Another important aspect of the
lectures and speeches given is the need to harvest rainwater to supplement
the water needs of the people in domestic as well as in agriculture
pursuits. The Resource persons and speakers also exhorted the community
leaders to take a pro-active role and emphasized on the need of
participatory responsibility by them in the efforts to conserve water in
their respective areas.
Participants in the programmes include community leaders, village
elders, teachers, school students including the farming community besides
general public, Government officials and members of Self – Help Groups
and NGOs.

The Baghmara Soil Conservation Cash Crops Division organized an
Awareness campaign at Rekmanggre under Rompa Bisik Mini Watershed. The
Division also organized a "Shramdhan" in which the villagers of
the area and officers of the Division participated.

28th July, 2003 [DSCO-(Shg-T)]
The office of the Divisional Soil Conservation Officer Shillong (T)
organized Awareness campaign as part of the observation on the Water month
at Mawlong village which falls under the Wahtamdong Micro–Watershed (WDPSCA).
The theme for the campaign is " Water - another name for life".
Officers who gave lectures during the campaign are Shri. K.W. Marbaniang,
DSCO, Shri. A.S. Kharlukhi, ASCO and Smti. S.Pohsnem, ASCO.

29th July, 2003 [DSCO-(Shg-T)]
An Awareness campaign programmes was held at Mawsiatkhnam village under
the Umlew Micro-Watershed (WDPSCA) in which farming community and
beneficiaries of the project participated. Speakers include officers of
the Division who gave exhaustive rendering on the technical aspects of
conservation and management of water and water sources.

30th July, 2003 [DSCO-(Shg-T)]
The office of the D.S.C.O. Shillong (T) celebrated the Water month at
Umrynjah village under the Umpling-Umrynjah watershed (WDPSCA). Shri. B.
Thangkhiew, Chairman of Umrynjah Watershed Committee presided over the
function in which the Chief Guest was Shri. P.R. Mawthoh, former Director of
Soil Conservation, Meghalaya. The speakers in the function explained on
the intricacies of water resources build-ups and exhorted the people and
beneficiaries to give their co-operation to the schemes and project
undertaken by the Division in their areas
